Our Story...

We are so grateful that you are here and that you are taking the time to learn about our organization. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization founded by MaShel & Clay West in July of 2023.

Our Story…

Eleven years ago, life dealt our family a sweet hand when our youngest son, Lucas, was born! Lucas was diagnosed with autism when he was nearly 3 years old. Our family’s journey with Luke over these past 11 years has taught us so much. While there have been incredibly challenging times, raising an angel has its perks. We have the benefit of seeing the world through the lens in which Lucas sees it, and it is a lovely perspective! That perspective has led us, honestly called us, down a different career path.

In February of 2023, I made the decision to leave my 20-year career at a healthcare recruiting firm to create our non-profit, Friends on the Spectrum. Why? Because autistic individuals and their families deserve more support and a stronger sense of belonging. Additionally, upon receiving that initial autism diagnosis of your child, it is still very challenging to find the right therapy and social support within your community.

When it comes to autism, we know that early intervention is critical to the long-term growth and development of these special people. While meaningful progress has been made throughout Utah, there is still so much opportunity to increase access to social interventions and adaptive training for autistic children and their parents. Families deserve a place where they are welcome with open arms. A place where they can receive the care, training and support they need while they adapt to their new and wonderful family dynamic. A place where these children will feel that they are the priority and not an afterthought.  Friends on the Spectrum exists to elevate the landscape!

We look forward to meeting you and your family!

All our love, MaShel
